The Romans dedicated January 1st to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings, who had two faces - one looking forward and the other looking backward.
As we approach the New Year I am focused on looking and moving your association forward. This year I am boldly going to make your New Year’s Resolution on your behalf. This year your New Year’s Resolution will be to become the advocate for community banking within your organization. Each and every member bank of the ICBSD needs a strong advocate within the organization. Will you resolve to be the one who is willing to speak up and be heard loud and clear? Now is not the time to be passive, now is the time to become fully engaged.
I recently came back from 3 days in Washington D.C. and the resounding message from Capitol Hill Staff other Community Banking State Executives and ICBA Staff was this, if you are a community banker you must be involved in the political advocacy. Political advocacy is now part of the job description and part of the necessary duties of being a part of bank leadership. Let me be frank, if legislation in not holding a place squarely in the threat box of your organization’s SWAT Analysis, you’re missing the boat.
It’s time to move yourself and your organization from a casual political observer to an active participant. It is time to flood Capitol Hill with emails, letters and phone calls. It’s time to join the National ICBA PAC and State ICBSD PAC 100 clubs.
Now that I have made your resolution, it is my resolution to make advocacy easy for you. Over the coming year your association will continue to ramp up our efforts. We will be sending you talking points, email text to copy and forward and lists of contacts to call. I cannot make you become your bank’s advocate; however, I and your association leadership promise we will make every effort to ensure you are informed, prepared and up for the task.
